Andrzej Tichý, is recognized as one of the most important and original authors of his generation. In his six novels, several of which have received awards, his innovative style is often characterized by a mosaic of voices and a poetic handling of language. Recurring themes include the powerlessness of marginalized groups, critiques of capitalism, xenophobia, class societies, and dehumanization.
Tichý’s latest novel, The Event Book, has been praised for its creative portrayal of class divides, vulnerability, and resignation in the face of the contemporary world. All of this is presented in a challenging prose described as “chamber music” and a “death dance through the people’s home”. From the work emerges a portrait of our time: a world without a future. Yet the figure Metatron, an angel, formulates a possible humanity: “those who are exiled, flee, drown, and are imprisoned, and those who are crushed by physically exhausting, mentally draining, and spiritually limiting labor are in fact sacred beings.”
Journalist and festival collaborator Mikael Olsson Al Safandi will converse with Tichý.
