Poetry readings by:
Artur Dron has been described as one of the few “front poets.” When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, he had just debuted as a poet but then enlisted as a sniper in the Ukrainian defense forces. During his service at the front, he wrote poems about experiences in the trenches, fear, the loss of friends, memories, and human connections. In his poetry collection We Were Here, he describes, in poetic form, the psychological, emotional, and existential realities of war through various life stories. Dron states that poetry does not protect against bullets but serves as a remedy for loneliness and despair.

Asmaa Azaizeh is a journalist and also one of the most prominent Palestinian voices in contemporary poetry today. In her third poetry collection, now translated into Swedish by Jasim Mohamed, Don’t Believe Me When I Talk About War, she allows personal stories to reflect the consequences of war and occupation in poetic form. Her poems touch on longing, identity, belonging, loss, and identity. Azaizeh’s poetry becomes a way to remember and preserve human dignity under oppression. Azaizeh challenges stereotypical ideas about Palestinian identity, and through the combination of journalism, poetry, and cultural production, she is regarded both as an artist and an activist.
