Nobel Translation and Resistance

In 2025, László Krasznahorkai was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his “visionary and powerful authorship that upholds faith in the possibilities of art amidst the horror of destruction.”

His translator Daniel Gustafsson, who is also an author, has himself received awards for his translations of Krasznahorkai’s novels The Melancholy of Resistance and Herscht 07769. These books confront the reader with the reality of Europe and the threats against it; the crises affecting climate, democracy, and the racist and neo-fascist tendencies that characterize our contemporary world.

Gustafsson finds more examples of resistance through humanism and empathy in contemporary Hungarian literature. He will lecture briefly on this topic.
