Karin Pettersson, journalist, editor, and culture chief at Aftonbladet, can now also call herself an author. In the recently released essayistic book The Curse, a hybrid between memoir, social criticism, and political essay, she reflects on the economic and political shifts in Sweden during the 1990s, the consequences of neoliberalism, and its impact on the present and future. The book is partly an autobiography and a broad examination of how Sweden and many Western countries changed during this period under the pressure of a neoliberal market logic that, in Pettersson’s interpretation, has become a kind of overriding “curse.”
This development has led, according to Pettersson, to a sense of powerlessness among many. Her book has drawn attention as an intriguing attempt to understand and reinterpret a transformative period in Sweden’s history.
She will converse with Agri Ismail, who is also an author and has experience as a lawyer in the international finance sector.
